How to Prepare for your first year at uni
How to Prepare for your first year at uni by Amber Rolfe Not feeling ready for uni? We can help with thatâ¦Starting university as a fresher is a new and scary experience, but being prepared for whatâs to come is the key to making your first year run as smoothly as possible. From gathering the right supplies, to learning how to make the most of your money, itâs all about knowing what to expect. To make sure youâre ready to become a fresher, hereâs how to prepare for your first year of uni: Choose your accommodation wiselyDeciding where you want to live for the next year of your life can be a tough call to make â" especially if itâs your first time away from home.Thatâs why itâs extra important to do your research beforehand.Youâll usually have a range of options when it comes to halls of residence â" from the more expensive accommodation that could come with an ensuite and meals included in the rent, to halls that will cost you less, but may involve sharing a bathroom or a longer commute to lectures .Using your accommodation pack to assess each one thoroughly is vital to ensuring you make the right choice â" based on your needs and available budget. And remember: get your application in ASAP. The best choices are likely to go quickly Gather (only) the essentialsIt can be tempting to buy every home appliance there is before you venture into your new life of âadultingâ, but think about it â" will you really need it all? Most shared accommodation will have the basics included (e.g. toaster, kettle, microwave, and you know, furniture), so before you stock up, find out whatâs already going to be there.Because not only could you end up with two of everything (or more if your flatmates make the same mistake), you could also be adding unnecessary additions to your overloaded boxes that you can barely fit in the car.If youâre struggling to figure out whatâs really essential, check your accommodation pack and ask at university open days (and on their social media pages) for mo re information. Additionally, your university will usually provide a âwhat to take to university checklistâ.If not, you can always use this one. Make sure your finances are organisedTwo words. Student. Finance.Setting this income up is vital to ensuring you actually have the funds to go to uni, and not completing your application on time could result in a very minimalist freshers week (see also: poor) â" so make sure youâre prepared to get it sorted and sent off ASAP.But before you apply for student finance, youâll need a bank account that allows you to make the most of your money.Even if you already have one, itâs always a good idea to look into student specific accounts to find a more suitable plan. After all, introductory deals with generous overdrafts are offered to students by a range of high street banks, and are designed to give you financial stability throughout university.N.B. getting all of the student discount cards (as well as a 16-25 railcard) is also a good idea⦠Learn to budgetLiving away from home often comes at a cost â" and even with the various student discounts and cheap uni nights, it can still add up.Although your first year will probably involve living in halls (where utility bills and internet are included in the rent), if you choose to live off campus, these will be something youâll need to factor into your budget. But halls arenât totally exempt from bills. If youâre planning on watching live TV, youâll still need to pay for a TV license (although avid Netflix and catch-up programme watchers need not apply). And no matter where you live, youâll also need to consider the cost of food, toiletries, course materials, and undoubtedly â" nights out*, before using your loan for spontaneous spending sprees â" making budgeting even more important. Get connectedSocial media is a great way to make sure youâre in the loop about your chosen university. And once youâve found your uniâs official pages, youâll be abl e to find out everything you need to know about freshers week, buy tickets for events, and get advice on essential uni prep. And, as many universities assign current students as âflat repsâ in each set of halls, theyâll usually be present on the groups to answer any questions you might have before you move in.Not only will joining social media groups help you to stay informed, itâll also give you the opportunity to connect with other freshers. That way, when you move into your flat and start your course, youâll have already got to know the people youâll be living/studying with. Consider a part-time jobIf you think youâll struggle to make ends meet even with a strict budget, it might be worth finding seasonal or part-time work. Not only will it help you with your finances, the work experience and skills you gain will be a beneficial addition to your CV â" especially if itâs related to your course. From retail and pub work to temping, internships, and freelance roles, there are a variety of positions that allow you to work around your studies. Most universities will also offer on-campus work (e.g. at the library, student union, or bar). And if the idea of working and studying at the same time sounds like too much, that doesnât mean you canât get a job. Many organisations will allow you to only work outside of term-time, meaning your uni work wonât be compromised.Part-time CV templateCV template for temp work*See also: fancy dress outfits, glowsticks, alcohol, various packs of cards. 12 Best Node.js Interview Questions Answers - Algrim.co
12 Best Node.js Interview Questions Answers - Algrim.co and some business logic which will ultimately respond with a payload of data. With all that in mind, there are a few essential steps most developers would consider when building a RESTful API with Node.js. In terms of tools, the engineer would want to choose a framework for routing HTTP requests like express.js or koa.js. The engineer would also want to investigate the types of data storage solutions that would best support his API. If the structure of data is uncertain, perhaps a NoSQL database like MongoDB would be better than an RDBMS like MySQL. Another important step in designing a RESTful API with Node.js, as well as with any other programming language, is to decide upon the set of HTTP endpoints which will support retrieving and submitting data to the API.

What Recruiters Really Want to See on Your CV
What Recruiters Really Want to See on Your CV Indiana Logan, a Senior Recruitment Consultant at the Graduate Recruitment Bureau, shares some advice and insider knowledge for graduates looking to get into the world of Recruitment. 1) As a senior recruitment consultant, what are the first things you look for in an applicant when recruiting? As a graduate recruiter you can receive a huge volume of applications for just one role and so you need to have a clear list of essential skills or experience that are a prerequisite for the role. The first thing I do is briefly scan to see which of these they tick. If they tick most of the boxes then I will usually call them as soon as possible or read further into their CV. Things I look for in their CV are minimum educational requirements, relevant experience, a desire to do the job I am advertising and the ability to work in that location. From an applicantâs perspective, they can identify this list from the job ad and any information they have about the company. Once you know this itâs all about making it leap off the page in the first ten seconds someone looks at your CV. A great way to make these obvious to someone scanning your CV is to put it at the top so itâs the first thing they read. For example, âHaving just graduated from a UK top 10 University with a 2.1 in Economics I am now looking to work for a large multinational corporation within the finance sector in London. My previous internships within this sector have given me a passion for this as a long term career.â Something like this tells me they match what I am looking for before I even read the CV and I am then just looking to the CV details to back this up. Specific and matching information is much better than the usual âI am a confident, motivated, punctualâ¦â which is something your interviewer will be the judge of! 2) What are major CV mistakes you notice when youâre looking for potential candidates? Clearly stating at the top of the CV they want to work in another sector or job than the one they have applied for is a common mistake. This tells me immediately the role I am recruiting for is their plan b, or c and in this job market that is an immediate turn off. I want candidates who are going to commit to the client and be a long term and beneficial employee and that wonât happen if they have somewhere else they really want to be. Also, presentation of CVs is very important. If a CV looks bad the implication is that the candidate is bad and they are either too commercially unaware to know how important a CV is or too apathetic about their job search. Some examples of âbad presentationâ include shabby formatting which makes it hard to read and follow, bizarre pictures, floral borders, a Graduate CV that covers six pages or just no content at all. Consistent formatting with bold headlines, clear dates and headlines such as achievements, awards, education and duties really helps to find the information I am looking for quickly and efficiently. 3) At the moment, what factors are employers looking for in their potential employees? They are looking for graduates with a clear focus on their job search. People who know what sector they want to start a career in and can prove their commitment with a good CV and experience portfolio to back it up are attractive to employers. They are also looking for people with a relevant degree, appropriate work experience from the 2nd year of University or Post graduate study and someone with a clear, long term commitment to that role. If you donât really know what you want to do for a specific job then identify groups of jobs and focus on those such as sales, analytical, charity etc. But donât expect a good job to be sold to you even if you are a good candidate because there will be someone else in the queue who can demonstrate a burning desire to do that role and who the company knows will commit and work hard. 4) What are the industry secrets to really getting yourself noticed and known? Call first! Every graduate recruiter gets hundreds of applications for each role they are in charge of. So before you apply, try and call the person who is advertising and introduce yourself. If you make yourself known to them they are more likely to take you forward. Even if you canât get through they will still get a couple of messages from you and hear your name so they are more likely to flag your application out of interest. If you canât get through then ask for their direct email and send the CV to them so it doesnât get lost in the system. Follow it up within 2 days for feedback and be persistent until you get an answer. If they donât want to interview you then try and get a reason as to why so you know what you need to do or where you are going wrong. You can also drop them a LinkedIn request after you have spoken to them. Linkedin is king at the moment and should be on every graduates guide of how to get a job. State clearly in your LinkedIn headline who you are and what you want, for example âEdinburgh Economics Graduate with Analytical Banking Internship looking for a Graduate Investment Banking Analytical Scheme in Londonâ. Then add an online CV so employers can really get to know you. I canât stress enough how important a great LinkedIn profile is. Start linking in with everyone relevant in that industry and hiring managers; donât be shy to request to add them and explain why in the email. Then start being proactive on the site; join relevant groups and âLikeâ updates to get noticed. Be proactive! Donât just sit there applying and hope the jobs come to you go out and find the jobs yourself, building up a big network of contacts whilst you do it. Keep track on Excel spread sheets so you are always on top of who you are in contact with, who they work for and what they can offer you. 5) How do you guarantee your CV will make an impression and get you through to the next stage? Many large recruiters use algorithms to search CVs for content before a human sees them, so mirroring the language they used to advertise the position will make sure your CV gets put forward for review. For example, if they are looking for high achievers then use this exact phrase and pack the buzzwords in so you tick all their boxes. The more relevant words to the job description you have in your CV the more likely your CV will get through. Even for jobs with small or mid sized employers make sure you use relevant words on your CV as much as possible. This looks great when someone scans your CV as they instantly see all the great qualities they are looking for. Make the language relevant to the role, for example, if itâs a sales position use strong sales focused words like: drive, targets, ambition, success, business, entrepreneur etc. to make your application as suited as possible to the position. Basically, donât just be average. Find out what the person recruiting for the job you want is looking for â" and then be that person. 6) What are the last, best pieces of advice you can offer as an expert? Be different and think long term. Use Linkedin â"it is your best friend in a job search and beyond. Donât just use it to make contacts but also to do your research. Look at experienced people who are doing the job that you want at the moment. See what types of things they have done and achieved and set about gaining similar qualities. Use them as a template for making yourself as desirable to employers as possible. Another thing is if you get declined from interviews, ask the hiring managers what you would need to do in the next year in order for them to want to interview you for the next intake. If you know what you need to do in order to get into those roles, you can then spend the next 2 years getting that experience and then reapply for those roles, hopefully with a much better chance of getting it since youâve tailored yourself to their needs. Graduates with a yearâs experience in something relevant, even in another sector or not necessarily in London, will usually trump raw graduates even for a graduate role because they have the experience to back them up. How to Write a Good Resume For Real
How to Write a Good Resume For Real'Writing Comonay DC' is a popular pattern in this workbook to earn money online. The success of this book can be attributed to the fact that it helps individuals write effective resumes that can help them get higher pay for their efforts. This book also gives sample resumes, guides on what to include and what to omit when writing a resume, and also help guide people how to use the Internet to make it possible to write resumes for free. This is a real workbook that can help you be successful in the future. There are two main parts of this book. The first part of the book is devoted to making resume that will be worth employers' time. The best part about this part is that it provides sample resumes that anyone can use as a template to create their own resume that will definitely get them more jobs. In the second part of the book, people are taught how to write effective resumes that they can easily use for free.Even though Comonay DC was first released by an author named Ciaran O'Reilly, a number of other writers have since added to the volume. These authors work hard to help people have success online through helping them get jobs and boost their financial resources. However, there is still a lot of information that many newbie writers may not know. Those who are in need of reliable guides on how to write a resume can be assured that these guides will show them how to get better quality resumes.Resume writing does not end with getting a job. The purpose of this workbook is to help people get higher pay for their efforts. Those who try to get good resumes without proper knowledge and training from professionals will get frustrated after not succeeding at all. The goal of this workbook is to teach people how to handle things the right way to make sure that their resumes and the resumes of others who work with them will get them a higher level of pay. Anyone who is at the basic level of experience writing resumes should get their r esumes evaluated by experienced writers before submitting it. Writing a good resume starts with writing a well-written resume. It is only after this step that people can move on to the next steps in achieving success with resumes. The most important part of an effective resume is the summary. This is where the information that the applicant can expect when they submit their resume gets summarized. All resumes that do not follow this pattern will be rejected by the companies. The descriptions of the skills and abilities that are found in resumes are a crucial part of how the resume writer has to sell themselves and their skills to the potential employer.Resumes can contain bullet points and workbooks. A well-written resume will always have a few 'essays' such as three to five paragraphs to explain what an applicant has done or what they hope to do in the future. Some people also like to take a personal essay for their resumes. However, these essays are optional because it will be wort h to leave them out of resumes that do not have enough space for personal essays. The main goal is to make sure that the potential employer can easily see what skills and abilities an applicant can show during interviews.Resumes are one of the most important marketing tools that an employee has. However, getting a resume from someone who knows how to write a good one can be difficult. Those who are serious about being able to earn higher pay for their resumes can take comfort in knowing that they have come across reliable guides like Comonay DC.

plan for job promotions - be promoted at work
plan for job promotions - be promoted at work Many individuals enjoy the company they work for. They like the company values, the company product, the company mission or a multitude of other aspects. However, after some time in a specific role, many individuals are ready to take that next step. Is it time for you to start thinking about a job promotion at work? If you want to be promoted, consider taking the following next steps. Understand what the next job entails. What are the skills that are required? What experiences do you need to gain before moving on to the next step? Find a job description for the next position. Review the requirements. Speak to individuals who are in the position currently. They will be able to share insights into the role that a job description couldnât possibly describe. Make a plan to get the skills you need to move into the next position. Some skills you will learn on the job but you will need to bring a solid base of talent to the table. Determine what the required skills are and make a plan to achieve them. You might do this by taking on new projects at work, getting a certification, working with a career coach, or learning new skills in the classroom, through books or through volunteer endeavors. Have a conversation. Does your manager know that you will eventually be looking to move into a particular role? If not, then when a position opens up, you may not have the advocate you need to make sure you are considered. Have regular conversations with your manager about your current performance as well as your future career aspirations. Job promotions can happen when your hard work meets an open opportunity. You cannot control when the opportunity might arise, but to be promoted make sure you are ready for the challenge when it does.

5 tips for landing your dream job through social media - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach
5 tips for landing your dream job through social media If youâre looking for a new job right now, you can expect to find an increasing number of opportunities via social media platforms. Here are my 5 tips for landing your dream job through social media. Build your reputation and position yourself as an expert through social media Once youâve decided how youâre going to brand yourself or your company, create accounts at all of the major sites where you can brand yourself â" LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook â" obviously depending on who your audience is. You can increase your visibility as an expert by consistently sharing tips and valuable content where your audience is most receptive to engaging with you. I use primarily LinkedIn and Facebook, but I also post videos with tips on YouTube. For more tips on how to position yourself as an expert, click here. Use LinkedIn effectively If you are a job seeker and are not using Linked In properly, you are missing out. LinkedIn is the worldâs largest professional network and employers and recruiters including myself use LinkedIn on a daily basis to find the right talent. However, if your profile isnât completed, keyword reach or optimized, employers wonât be able to find you. Here are a few ways you can use LinkedIn in your job search: Attract attention of recruiters by creating a strong summary section and an enticing headline Research companies youâre interested in. Whether you want to research a few target companies or a potential business school, such London School of Business and Finance (LSBF), LinkedIn will allow you to find and connect with decision makers in your target companies Post interesting updates related to your area of expertise. LinkedIn allows you to post status updates and linked your blog posts to your profile. Every time I post a new article on my blog, it updates on my profile so my connections know what I am writing about. Join a wide range of professional groups â" e.g. SAP Consultants or Java Developers. There are often job opportunities available through these groups and recruiters also join the groups when looking for candidates for their open positions. Identify the right recruiter/HR person. You can use LinkedIn to find someone inside the company you want to work for, and send your resume that way. I get lots of people contacting me on LinkedIn every day and if their experience is relevant to the roles I am recruiting for, I stay in contact with them. Engage with a prospective employer instead of jumping straight in In my recruitment job, I often get LinkedIn messages from job seekers asking me to find them a job, yet they clearly havenât read my profile, as I have zero experience or contacts in their areas of expertise. Social media is great for identifying and communicating with people in your target companies and for communicating your suitability and passion for the position. However, engage with someone first before asking for job opportunities. You wouldnât ask a stranger at a networking meeting to find you a job, so why do it online? Research the companies you want to apply for. Even if there are no vacancies now, you can identify the key people and offer an introduction to yourself and why you perceive yourself as a good fit for future positions. Donât harass your contacts but keep an eye on what they are doing and how theyâre doing it. Build online relationships with the relevant players so that even if they donât currently know of anything that would suit you, theyâll remember you if something comes up further down the line Show curiosity and concern when connecting with contacts online â" reply to your contactsâ tweets asking for help and contribute to the discussions they start. Build a recruiter friendly Twitter bio You can make your Twitter presence employer-friendly by putting your job pitch in your Twitter bio, using a professional looking picture, tweeting about your job search and establishing yourself as an expert in your field on Twitter. You can also use a tool like Visual CV to include a link to an online CV in your bio. Twitter allows you to seek out potential employers and useful contacts â" you can use a directory like Twellow to help you find people in your chosen field. Remember to use appropriate hash tags (#) to have your tweets picked up by recruiters. E.g. if you are an IT professional, try using UKjobs or #IT at the beginning of each tweet. You can also start following recruitment people from the companies youâd like to work for and you can then get in contact with them directly or respond to their advertisements. Look after your online reputation I once spoke to the Managing Director who didnât hire a PR person who sounded very impressive in interviews, after seeing hundreds of his drunken pictures online⦠Remember that anything you put online can be seen by prospective employers when they Google you, so make sure you remove any inappropriate Facebook pictures or status updates. Even if your settings are set to Private, some of what youâve put online can be seen when employers Google you. If you wouldnât want your prospective employer to see what youâre about to post â" then donât do it! Hope youâve found the tips useful. Would love to hear your stories on how youâve landed jobs using social media â" please post them below! __________________________________________________________________________ Margaret Buj is an Interview and Career Acceleration Coach who specializes in helping professionals get hired, promoted and paid more.
